Queens of Drama: the Perfect Drama Queen Vehicle

Gorgeous, talented, and driven to create, the six actresses at the heart of Queens of Drama represent the cream of the soap opera genre. Crystal Hunt created the troubled character of Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light. Vanessa Marcil shone on General Hospital, Beverly Hills 90210, and Las Vegas. Lindsay Hartley is best known for her roles on All My Children, Days of our Lives, and Passions; Passions also featured Chrystee Pharris. Hunter Tylo is unforgettable as Dr. Taylor Hayes of The Bold and the Beautiful. At the center of this stellar cast stands Donna Mills, whose career in television and film covers decades; she’s perhaps best known for her portrayal of Abby Cunningham on Knots Landing.

Queens of Drama follows the paths of these six actresses as they work together – and sometimes at odds – to create a new primetime soap. The ladies form a production company, undertake their own scripts and casting issues, and take on all the duties of producers as they attempt to create a new show of which they themselves will be the stars.

Queens of Drama purports to be a reality show, and the ten episodes of its first series contain all the hallmarks of the reality genre. But the basis of the show is itself so metatheatrical that viewers have to question where improve ends and scripted dialogue begins. After all, as the queens of drama, these actresses are also expected to be drama queens, demonstrating all the qualities that we expect to find in soap-opera divas.

Viewers can’t help but be distracted by the presence of Donna Mills, who, given a career in soaps since 1966, is going to speak and act with the voice of authority. But one actress not to be overlooked in this cast is Crystal Hunt. In Queens of Drama, Crystal’s innocent expressions and delicate gestures form a perfect foil for the more histrionic characters. In fact, some of Crystal Hunt’s best moments have been captured on her Vimeo channel.  Occasionally Crystal the character loses her temper and expresses her frustrations. But she generally projects inner strength, determination, and commitment to the project she and her crew have undertaken.

Although she is clearly the youngest of the cast of Queens of Drama, Crystal Hunt is nevertheless a seasoned actress. She received a Daytime Emmy Award for her work on Guiding Light as her website shows, and has gone on to work on One Life to Live. But Crystal has also appeared in film, most notably as Lauren in Magic Mike XXL, which debuted in 2015.
