World’s Strongest Cup of Coffee Coming to the United States

In 2016, a coffee entrepreneur from South Africa started thinking about ways to really stand out in a world where Starbucks reigns supreme and where the market is becoming more competitive on a daily basis. Sean Kristafor decided that his ticket to success would be to roast the strongest cup a coffee lover could enjoy without suffering from heart palpitations. With this in mind, Black Insomnia was born.

Black Insomnia is a special blend of robusta beans that have been carefully cultivated, picked and roasted to yield the maximum amount of caffeine in a single serving. The first coffee shops to purchase this new roast are located in Cape Town; Kristafor was pleased with the reception and decided to venture into the lucrative American market, which surpasses many other nations such as Costa Rica, Italy and Turkey in terms of per capita coffee consumption.

To get an idea of how strong Black Insomnia is, it is worth taking a look at the guidelines recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which stand at no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day. Black Insomnia’s caffeine content has been measured at 58.5 mg per fluid ounce, which means that someone drinking an entire cup would consume 300 mg over the FDA recommendation. According to the opinion of a caffeine researcher at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, a cup of Black Insomnia may trigger an arrhythmia episode and also cause restlessness.

The strongest roast offered by coffee giant Starbucks contains less than 22 mg of caffeine per fluid ounce, which means that a cup Black Insomnia would be equivalent to two cups of Dark Roast.

Black Insomnia is currently available from specialty online roasters at the reasonable price of $19 per pound. It is interesting to note that this is not the strongest coffee available in the U.S. despite its claims. That title goes to Death Wish, a roast sold by a New York company that specializes in caffeine products such as soft drinks, herbal pills and even shampoo. Death Wish contains nearly 60 mg of caffeine per fluid ounce.
