There’s More Proof that Coffee Is Truly Good for You

Research was recently published in Annals of Internal Medicine that suggests that good health and coffee go hand in hand. Two studies were conducted, and both studies assert that people who drink coffee are less likely to die from heart disease. Surprisingly, these results were the same for both caffeinated and decaf coffee drinkers.

One study involved 185,000 people from various populations. The study included Americans of African, Japanese, Native Hawaiian, Latinos and European descent, and lasted for 16 years. The researchers observed the patterns of coffee consumption by giving participants a questionnaire concerning their coffee drinking patterns and health data. For instance, the researchers wanted to know whether the participants smoked or were dealing with an illness.

Results from the stud show that higher coffee consumptions was connected to reduced risk of death for people in all population groups, with the exception of Native Hawaiians (there was no significant difference). Individuals who drank between two and four cups each day lowered the risk of death from conditions like heart disease, cancer and stroke by 18 percent.

The second study, which was not related to the first, focused on 520,000 people in 10 countries in Europe. These individuals were also studies over a 16-year period. Researchers discovered that drinking coffee lowered the risk of death from diseases of the circulatory and digestive systems. This was observed across each country and was fairly the same regardless of location.

However, there are a few caveats to consider concerning these studies. The first research study classified a cup of coffee as 8 ounces, but the type of coffee and ingredients in the coffee (i.e. cream, sugar, flavoring) were not taken into account. However, it is important to note that adding flavoring and sweetener to coffee can increase the calories. The actual amount of caffeine wasn’t evaluated either, which indicates that the actual coffee bean may be especially beneficial.
